There's nothing wrong with
self-censorship, where you're making your own choice. If I decide not to have a character cuss a blue streak, in order to make my book more palatable to some readers, that is my choice to make, and my right to make it.
It's when that decision is forced upon you/taken away from you that it is objectionable.
