Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but I see nothing in your post that suggests you're looking in the correct subdirectory, namely
3.16.0_target, for the relevant output file
KoboRoot.tgz. The fact that you mention
KoboRoot.tar indicates you're looking in
3.16.0_source instead.
