We have similar laws in the US. There's nothing stopping them from ASKING you to work ridiculous hours, and there's nothing stopping you from AGREEING to work ridiculous hours. There are, however limits to how long they can "require" you to work. Require: as in, "work this long or you're fired."

In IT it's quite often "required" that you work ridiculous hours. Most people have done something that can technically get you fired if they want to. For instance, most people I worked with didn't completely follow the dress code and that is part of what you agree to. If they want to fire you for not working enough hours, they'll find something else to fire you for.
