Thought I would post once more, just in case this can be of help to someone who encounters a similar problem in the future.
What I discovered is that it actually was a USB cord problem, after all. But I didn't realize this until multiple tests with two different devices, using two different USB cords.
The original Sony USB cord, although not damaged in any way, seems to have simply stopped working.
So, definitely something worth checking if you run into a similar problem.
The slow loading issue on my Reader seem entirely unrelated to the cord issue. I suppose it is related to some epub file(s) or the number of annotations I have.
