there is a way to remove it, but unfortunately i'm not at home with my kindle, else i'd give you confirmed detailed instructions, but if my memory serves me correctly, take roughly the following steps:

1. go to your home screen.
2. select settings (from the right most menu)
3. select device options
4. select personalize kindle (or something like that)
5. there should be something to turn off regarding recommendations.

if this is unclear, i'll try to post a more detailed description once i have my kindle with me. but hopefully, even if what i wrote above is slightly wrong, you can poke around and find what i'm talking about. the key is getting to the option to "personalize your kindle."
