I tend to keep the DPT-S1 out of the mud and dirt but if it ever catches dirt, it shouldn't pose a problem to clean it apart from perhaps the edges where the IR bands sit. Since the screen isn't glossy it's not prone to scratches either. I don't think a protective cover would do any good but, as long as it does not irritate the IR sensors, wouldn't hurt either. If you find a cheap one which fits (or can be made so easily) I'd like to know about it!

On the subject of firmware updates: Could anyone with a good command of the Japanese language try to contact SONY JP and ask what is their plans for the US updates? SONY US doesn't provide any contact possibilities and, since they rarely know what's going on, wouldn't be of much help anyway. SONY JP on the other hand has online contact forms. I tried to use one but for some (possibly charset related) problem I could not submit the form successfully. If anyone here could manage to get in closer contact with SONY concerning the DPT-S1 that would be great!
