There's many possible answers to that question. First, it will depend on where you are, or more precisely which store you are using. I can't offer good advice on the Amazon.co.uk store. If you are talking about the primary store (US, though many others use it as well) then opinions may vary on that subject.

There is a BOGO sale going on right now, so that's a good way to maximize credits.

Normally in October there will be a Buy-4-Get-$10 promotion. You could get you membership now, save credits until October, then have 3/4 of the books you need to get the bonus. The other could be bought at a discount (members get 30%, I believe). Whispersync titles (buy the Kindle version and get the Audible version of the same title at a discount) normally count as well. There's no guarantee that promotion will happen, though they are fairly consistent.

Beyond that I'd say just keep your eyes open here. When there is a members-only deal or a credits-only deal jump in and take advantage. I did the same thing last year (waited for a BOGO sale, signed up, and immediately got 2 books for my first credit).
