I haven't had any trouble testing codes and using them later. But I suspect that the overwhelmed contest servers sometimes give out duplicate codes. So in between your test and when you use it, another person may have received and used it.
Just a heads up the codes ARE still working. I just went back through some of the (old) posted codes and managed to use several just now to buy a few more books. :-)
