Capricorn - thanks for getting back to me, I'm pretty sure the 'plain text filter' has always been what you get if you select "Index Properties and contents" on any file type for which there's no specific iFilter.
To index an epub you have to unpack and index the content. AFAIK you wont get anything useful from an epub out of the plan text iFilter.

It's called Archivarius 3000, I downloaded the trial version only yesterday so haven't had much time to evaluate. There's a lot to like about it, indexes everything I've ever heard of and a heck of lot I've never heard of. It's fast and it seems to be accurate. I'm not enamoured with its user interface and its indexes are fairly chunky, but... better than Windows Search for ebooks. Its not free - single user is €30, unlimited users (Windows Server) is a €1,000.
