Catching ... my ... breath.
Just managed to rid the house of our first bat. We've been here almost 25 years, and I'm not sure how he got in. His initial flightpath seemed to come from the basement, which used to be "vented" to the outdoors, but I suppose I might have left a gap when I tried to seal it up.
I tried to "herd" him out the front door, but he wasn't going for it and, eventually, I began to worry about what else I might be letting inside.
So, I changed tactics. It called for some rapid broom work, and I think I may have twisted my back, but I managed to swat him, scoop him up in a dustpan, and deposit him in the front yard. I like bats and I hope I didn't hurt him too badly, but I had other priorities just then. (Around here, bats are serious carriers of rabies.)
