i charged the reader with the normal usb-cable on my office pc without the e-Reader software installed - it charged.
This has been rehashed to death here, but I'll repeat: jwhayn above has the best solution:

"I bought a very inexpensive PSP cable that has a USB connector at one end that plugs into a standard USB charger. The other end has two connectors: a mini USB connector (not used for the Reader charging) and a PSP/Reader compatible power plug that is used to deliver the juice to the Reader via the Reader power connector."

This PSP charge/data cable will charge from any pc or other usb charging source (incl. usb wallworts and car chargers). Plus the mini-usb can be used to transfer books to the Reader as well.

I'm not sure exactly why or when, but often attempting to charge via mini-usb on a PC w/o the Library sw can DRAIN the Reader's battery. Do so at your own risk.

Besides, charging via the power socket (and not the mini-usb) is faster. And far more reliable.
