Cryptonomicon was my first introduction to Neal Stephenson. His books are very lengthy and they all seem to be a big info dump/general observation of the state of things for the first 1/3 before the story really kicks in. I noticed this with Cryptonomicon and more recently Reamde and Anathem.

Having said that, I enjoyed them all. The Baroque Cycle was also good but it was more a chronology of the scientific revolution so I wouldn't say there was one big ending the story was buliding and/or driving towards.

I actually just finished Anathem on a plane yesterday and started Seveneves.

Seveneves actually seems to break from what I said above as the book jumps right into Earth's impending doom at high speed.

I really like Stephenson's work but I can certainly see how it isn't for everyone.
