Surface Pen uses two types of batteries:
Writing, erasing, and right-clicks are powered by one AAAA alkaline battery you install in the bottom part of the pen.
Opening OneNote and taking screenshots are powered by two pre-installed, size 319 silver-oxide coin cell batteries in the top of the pen.
HOWEVER I saw on a different page that the AAAA battery doesn't power the bluetooth, so the 319's likely do. In that case taking them out may stop all pen functionality so may not do what you want
