Does the SP3 use the same pen as the Surface 3? If it is there are 2 different batteries. One covers the top button and the other covers the 2 buttons on the shaft. If so you can safely remove the top one and still have the rest of the functions. I noticed that because at the time I got the Surface I didn't use OneNote and it seemed like a pain. I've since starting using OneNote, but the desktop not the metro version so it's still of no help to me
