If someone does this they should be aware that the model and firmware of the registered Kindle will determine what flavor of book file (MOBI or AZW3) is downloaded from Amazon for installation via USB. You need to have a newer model Kindle if you want the newer AZW3 (KF8) format. Advanced formatting will be lost for some books if only MOBI format is used.
Also, I think that these days you need to register the device to your account via the Kindle interface, so it needs to work well enough to to accomplish that. A Kindle that won't power on or has a totally broken screen will prevent that. (A Kindle with a few lines on the screen due to a broken substrate would work.)
