You can buy a used one.

Just this past week my wife informed me that our Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G bit the dust. Half the screen is blank Everything seems to work but you can't see half the screen

I have searched and it appears that I can buy a new replacement screen for about $40. The DIY articles on how to take the Kindle apart and put in the new parts are readily available

Still I was thinking that maybe a $119 touch paperwhite with 300 ppi and a self lit screen would be pretty nice especially with a sale, but then I read that the new e-ink Kindles don't read ordinary text to you, and I liked that function especially while driving/traveling

My new plan is to take the old Kindle apart and get an idea of the complexity. The real problem is that they keep warning you how delicate the screens are. If I am still confident after I have disassembled the Kindle, I will take the risk and order the new screen.
