or split the library into two - a current books libnrary and an archive
keep only the small current one on device. keep the larger on in cloud and/ or on removable storage. calibre has all the tools you needed to move books between libraries.
but nowadays a 32Gb USB3 stick is so cheap, just buy two; one for live, one for backup & be done. i doubt your library is >32Gb ?
