Thanks. It's coming up now....in win 10.....I'll see where things are...
ETA, back up in Win 10 on the laptop (everything is fine here on the desktop...other than I did have an unexpected restart that seemed related to internet access...)
Had to reinstall a few applications on the laptop that I'd installed/updated after first installation of win 10, but I think I'm back where I was....the Windows Update is checking for updates and reporting that none are available....i.e. all is up to date.
I did have it check for updates before reinstalling and so I'm thinking it may have downloaded the Windows 10 patch KB 3081424 but I'm not sure how to check of know for sure. BTW for anyone interested is this:

I'm just going to leave it alone and proceed.
Now back to my desktop crash...more for anyone reading than anything else....my internet connection dropped (wireless - comcast) and I ran the troubleshooter (this happens, Comcast drops or goes out or whatever and I have to restart the wireless adapter). The desktop crashed while this was in progress. The restarted with the heart-stopping message "Missing Operating System" -- I've seen this before on this machine on a few rare occasions. I did the three-finger salute (ctrl-alt-del) and it restarted and all seems fine since.
Good Luck Everyone!
