Trust your eyeballs first.

If the item (link, unsolicited attachment) looks fishy, you will not need the smell attachment (WD) in the first place.
I always look at the link code (on the status line). Obscured (or hidden by a tinyURL) and I need to think about where the link came from (Just because my sister
sent it... She got hacked

Unfortunately, there is now drive by (hover) malicious code, so some protetcion is still needed.
