Yes, I think most of us know that and alternatives have been oft stated in this and other threads. But there have been some in this thread who have been not wanting to miss the quick and easy player that was in Media Center and my response was addressing that, not trying to promote any particular solution.
I suspect that any of us capable of doing a Google search will find that there are several free Players other than VLC, including ones much slicker to use than VLC. I'll leave you and others to each vigorously promote their own preferred solution as being the only sensible one. The rest of us will pick our own favorite and quietly enjoy it.
(Of course, Windows DVD Player will not substitute for the few that remain using Windows Media Center extenders (as far as I know only Xbox remained supported and it is not at a loss for a solution) and those in the USA using Media Center with certified cable devices (as far as I know, I am not in the US, that only affects CableLabs devices)).
