Note, it is not free if you did a clean install of Windows 10, that regardless of whether one had Windows Media Center beforehand. So if wanting the player free and intending to do a clean install; upgrade Windows 10 first, get this update, then do the clean install. It is in the shop for purchase otherwise (it is about the same price as Windows Media Player was).
On a first short play with it, it seems to be a satisfactory substitute for the DVD playing functionality.

No, Windows Media Center was much more than a DVD player.
I've got a million dvd players. What I don't have now is an off the air DVR with channel guide and ability to watch live and record tv using my networked DTV receiver/interface.
