In case anyone is interested, KOBO responded quickly with instructions for reset / factory reset, which sadly did not work. Next they asked for pictures (to make sure I did not smash my Aura) and proof of purchase. I have sent these off.
I am happy with the speed of the replies, now I hope they follow through and offer me a replacement quickly. I miss my Aura, but am reading on the old WiFi for now...
