Gotcha. Have you done the basics like de-authorise and re-authorise both the reader and ADE? Sorry, I don't have anything that old here to test; however FWIW I still use ADE 1.7.2 here on my Mac running the latest OS, and have no problems.
Have you tried yoinking out the file on your Powerbook and running Alf's tools over it to circumvent the problem?
