i went to the circus tonight, to see a new show by Les Colporteurs, a company of funambules. it is called Le fil sous la neige (the wire under the snow), and it is based on the story of the troupe's star and founder, Antoine, after he fell during a repetition and broke his spine, and his very long recovery (he was paralysed from the waist down. now, he can walk again, but not very well, and needs a cane. he will never be able to go on a wire again), with the help and support of his friends. it was breathtakingly beautiful, and heartbreaking, and also sometimes hilariously funny and staggeringly impressive. those funambules are like birds, darting around on the wires, leaping from one to the other, dancing... amazing. i honestly can't remember the last time i was so moved by a show. if ever Les Colporteurs come to your city, RUN to see them.
