I haven't really played around much with USB Networking.
But I am completely unsurprised that you couldn't set a file on a USB as executable, assuming the USB drive was formatted with FAT32 which they usually are.

FAT32 has
never supported extended linux attributes, you will need to mount the drive as executable (and then all files get the executable bit dynamically applied).
