IMO, battery drain is caused by spuriously triggered sleep cover wakeups, e.g. due to vibration / shock when carrying the Kobo in my bike bags which might additionally cause a lot of page flips. But it's not _heavy_ battery drain - I guess it was around 3..5% extra per day.
It is possible that when the flap of the cover moves it can wake your device.
your option works good, or just put the reader off totally..
