My one question is: is it big enough to view one page of a typical double-column textbook without having to pan around or repeatedly zoom in and out? And if it isn't, is the surface 3 pro big enough?
I would suggest that you size a window on your computer and take a book for yourself using a PDF viewer or Adobe reader. The correct sizes are:
10" x 6.67" Surface Pro 3.
9" x 6" Surface 3.

You should be able to judge based on the size of the characters but don't worry about any fuzzy characters. The Surface has a higher resolution display than most computer screens. Read about Screen sizes in our wiki.
