So, I'd better rephrase my needs: a fronlit ePub reader comfortable for everyday usage as a reader, and allowing me to install a few custom apps (e.g., calibre companion). For the sake of discussion, let's say I remove the requirement of a low price.
I am beginning to think that there is no such a device, is it?...

There is no such device. If you want to be able to install apps, you're going to have to put up with the shorter battery life of an open Android device. The reason they have a shorter battery life is that, precisely because they're designed to run apps, their CPU runs constantly, like an LCD tablet. On a dedicated eInk reader, on the other hand, the CPU goes into a very low-power sleep mode in between page turns, because it has nothing to do.
The battery life of eInk Android devices is significantly better than that of LCD tablets, but not as good as that of eInk readers. When I had one myself (the Onyx T68) I got perhaps a week on a battery charge, compared to 2-3 days on my Nexus 7 tablet, and 2-3 weeks from an eInk reader.
