'All in one' tarball?

Since I'm tired with re-setting up everything manually after every resets, I tried to make an 'all in one' KoboRoot.tgz(include patch/configs). However, after tackling with the firmware tarball (3.15.0), it seems that the Kobo H2O will be unable to make a wifi scan (returned failed, even without a blank list).

The setup process of mine:
1. factory reset
2. setup without wifi (mount)
3. cp tempered KoboRoot.tgz
4. install and successfully boot (into nickel, if database is updated in tarball)
5. try to scan wifi (success or fail)

But all repacked tarball (even if I only `tar xvzf` and `tar cvzf` the original KoboRoot.tgz back) failed.
Is there a right way of doing this? I'm pretty a laymen about Kobo firmware. If anyone has done similar things, please shed me some light! Thanks!

In case it matters, I use GNU tar ver 1.28 in the forementioned process.
