They would sell a book with DRM because the company or person publishing it wanted it to have DRM, many publishers insist on DRM and won't allow their books to be sold without it. The Apprentice Alf blog can help with DRM removal if you need it.

DRM'd Kindle books can be read on any Kindle, Fire or Kindle App (PC, Mac, iOS, Android) registered to the same account that the book was purchased on (in a few cases specific book [like fixed layouts] don't work on every single device/app). As a Kindle user the experience of downloading and reading a DRM'd book is the same as one without DRM.
