I don't see this problem on linux either.
(I found calibre to be generally slow on Windows, but I blame that on a combination of anti-Windows sentiment and using underpowered systems. )

Maybe the OP's computer is performing overaggressive swapping?
I have the original 2.0 that still allowed XP installs. No hack was needed.
I have one of the 'Lucky' systems where it does run.
