serial number "removed", huh? Likely a stolen Kindle. Although I suppose it could've been reported as lost.

Check the firmware version. Chances are it is already updated to fw>=5.6.0 -- which means it cannot be jailbroken anymore.
Well, it still can, if you follow the directions in the sticky for performing the jailbreak over the serial port.
