If you want to turn you ereader into a Japanese one, all you have to do is go into the language settings and choose Japanese.

There is no difference between the devices released in Japan and elsewhere. There is also no difference between the firmware used anywhere in the world. The only thing that appears different is when it is released. Kobo has a practice of releasing an update when they release a device. And then when they release it in Japan. Anything that is different about this release will be in the next release for the rest of the world.

In any case, 3.16.10 was released to the beta list. I have been using it on all my devices for about a week. The only Japanese specific thing is changes in the dictionaries. The Japanese dictionary is much bigger and there are now two English to Japanese translation dictionaries. I have no idea what the difference is, but they show up in the dictionary lists as "English - 日本語(ジーニアス)" and "English - 日本語(プログレッシブ)". We can expect these changes in the next general release for other devices.
