Do you use a script or a specific command to turn on calibre-server? I'll try to write a small bash script.
Given my workflow, calibre is already on, at the time I have an ebook ready to add to my device. So, I just click on "Start content server" in the "Connect/share" tab of calibre. This turns the three balls green on the tab, and adds the IP&port#, the server is using, to the "Stop content server" selection. (You may need to enter that info, the first time you use the "Local calibre catalog" selection in Koreader.)

Calibre has a command line option to start the server, it could even be added to your PC's startup, if you wanted.

Luck;
Ken
