Well if you use them too infrequently, the dust buildup in the carpet can damn near kill them. Especially more modern ones with all the filters in them.
I also particularly like how the reusable filters you're supposed to wash out and let air dry end up stinking no matter what you do. Have to vacuum up a bunch of baking soda to make it stop. I think I'd rather buy new filters...
