As for fonts, you need a jailbroken device to install the font hack, so on current devices (fw>=5.6.0) you need to jailbreak over the serial port. Not for the faint of heart.

It doesn't have a serial port. Is it more difficult than unlocking & rooting a Nexus 7 or replacing the usb port? I don't want to take off her amazony capabilities because she loves the ease of it, syncing up etc. But if I could just get a decent size battery indicator on it for her it would help. She keeps going at it with a magnifying glass then begging us to check it for her.
Firmware is 5.6.2.1
