Smith's writing is not juvenile, but is a 'cartoonish', 1930s-styled pulp opera.

Unfortunately, you've read some of the comments here already, as his writing being kind of "over-the-top" stylistically.

Some books are meant to be discovered at a 'perfect' age, at an ideal time, but then become almost unreadable as one gets older. I suspect that Smith falls into this category of appreciation.
