Yes, to be sure. I was only trying to answer the question the way it was asked -- does the KINDLE (device) convert the epub? I realize it could also be done on the author's computer, using KindleGen or Kindle Previewer, but I was assuming the author wasn't going to be doing any of that, but would upload it directly to the KDP his own / her own self.

On the rare occasion when I want to go from epub to my Fire HD, I convert it to a mobi on Calibre. (I use mobi because Send to Kindle, a great little app, doesn't seem to recognize the AZW format.)
