If they are going to do it that way, then the front screen has to be centered so you can rotate it and it does not look "upside down." You also need to weight balance it so neither "top" nor "bottom" is heavier in either orientation.
Asymmetry is an interesting idea for reducing size and weight, but to have asymmetry, you need symmetry elsewhere.

It's not asymmetrical. Note that the drawing depicts landscape mode. In portrait mode (which is default), the thick portion becomes the bottom of the device.
