I'm frankly puzzled. No, I didn't see sales on any items I've got on my list of "someday" purchases, but I don't usually find all that much on Black Friday either. There seemed to be a wide variety of merchandise, but since I'm pretty frugal and not an impulse buyer, I passed.
I expect Amazon got a lot of people to sign up for a free trial of Prime, and some percentage of those people will decide to pay the yearly fee.
Since Amazon hyped this sale so much, I can understand a bit of the disappointment, but, seriously, Amazon's being faulted for having a sale??? That seems crazy to me.

Amazon's not being faulted for having a sale. Amazon is being faulted for promoting a sale as bigger than Black Friday, tempting people into signing up for Prime, then unloading lots of crap.
