I think you might be looking in the Calibre directories and seeing an .opf file there possibly? Of course any original epub won't have that opf file until you add it into Calibre, it's part of Calibre's required files.
As DNSB said, you need to open the epub file in Sigil, and there you'll find 2 extra files, opf and ncx, in the left-hand column towards the bottom.
