I looked at this when I started the cloud work. It requires replacing some fundamental underlying Google-supplied compatibility code to newer Google-supplied compatibility code. When I changed it, everything broke. The grouping drawer wouldn't open and close, graphics moved around, colors were shifted toward red, and the action bar stopped working. In addition, Gingerbread support disappeared. After 2 days of fighting with it I decided that trying to fix all of this required much more effort than it was worth, especially given that I don't really like "material design".

Understandable. The effort is not worth it. As I said before it's not as important as eventual new features or new additions to the template functions.
