Talon by Julie Kagawa (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is the 1st in her Talon Saga series of YA contemporary urban fantasy adventures with f/m romantic elements, starring a young dragon shapeshifter in hiding, with a destiny to fight a powerful society of dragonslayers, who discovers herself in conflict with some of her own kind and forming reluctant alliances with one of the enemy, free courtesy of publisher Harlequin's UK daughter-clone Mills & Boon's MIRA imprint's Ink line for their not-dedicated-romance works.

This is the featured Free Book of the Week in the iTunes UK store, but is also available as an official publisher promo elsewhere, apparently to promote the recently-released 2nd-in-series which is on sale for just £0.99 in various outlets.

Currently free, probably just through Monday but possibly for longer @ B&N UK, Amazon UK, iTunes UK, & Kobo (available to the UK and Ireland, but not any of the usual EU/Oceania countries which sometimes get the UK freebies when I spot-check regional Amazon & iTunes stores, though YMMV), and probably also Google Play UK.

Unlikely to cross the pond, as the Harlequin mothership proper has issued this in a slightly different unfree edition in North America.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because anything with dragons in it automagically gets the nod, but also because it's got the interesting setup of having the dragon shapeshifter be the girl (and not the usual sort of thing we've gotten in the past where it's some jaded dragon-hybrid male falling for those sexy, sexy, virginal* human females) and not automatically ending up with the first guy to show up, at least if the spoilery blurb for the next book which promises a potential alternate love interest and heroine-led rescue operation is accurate, and is apparently told through multiple POVs from various characters on the different sides of the conflict, according to the customer reviews, so this one I might actually try.

But mostly because dragons, really.
