Christmas in July isn't a new phenomenon. Perhaps more stores are getting into it, but QVC and HSN shopping channels have been doing Christmas in July sales for years, offering both holiday decorations and gift items. Likewise, the Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel aren't anything new.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it just seems like a fun thing to think about winter holidays and cold weather at the height of summer.

My mom worked in a fabric store back in the 70s and 80s, and she said they always had "Christmas in July" sales to remind folks who make homemade gifts that they'd better get started - Christmas wasn't all that far away if you're hand-crafting your gifts!
