I was thinking there might not be a new voyage at all this year, but (true or not) this points to a possible new wrinkle amazon may add to entice people to upgrade.
I've always thought the slow refresh of the e-ink screen is due to the screen technology. Otoh, I do remember some European company showing a prototype that played passable video. Apparently you CAN overcome the slow refresh with a fast CPU.
Personally, having a faster e-reader does not do much for me. I even have my PW set to full refresh on every turn. It already passes the responsiveness threshold in that when I tap the screen to change page, something happens without noticeable delay. Page turn animation? My tablet does it flawlessly and I turn it off.
I guess they could improve the seek function so when you use the scrubber, the entire screen changes and not just the popup window. These are nice refinements but not must have
What WOULD be interesting to me is if they can make it fast enough that it can run general apps. There are lots of text heavy material I'd like to read on a nice e-ink screen -- rss feeds, blogs, Pocket, email, forums etc. E-ink tablet would be a new category of device (calm down, folks, you can still keep your e-reader). It won't happen though, because I think Amazon wants to keep a clear delineation between their kindle and Fire product line.
