Yes, I think that was my first mistake, but maybe inevitable. As I buy from Amazon more than occasionally, they would know I'm living in Japan, - that is if the Kindle branch is connected to the Amazon store branch. However, on the computer I can get the Japanese Amazon site in English. I'm a new Kindle user, so I don't know a lot of things yet.
