A little help?

I splurged (only a little bit, because of the sorry state of my wallet) on the recent Eisner sale. I didn't even get the comics I wanted the most (the Sandman), but I purchased several series and I thought: OK, this is it for me this summer. No more comics for a while.

A couple days later, I have 4 or 5 titles in my cart. Oh well.

This current DC sale looks like an awesome way to get to know the DC universe a little bit... But all the collections are described by saying something like "the event that rocked the foundations of the DC universe" or that "changed the DC universe forever". That's not very helpful for newcomers, folks.

Out of this selection the only one I've read is Forever Evil (I purchased it in a recent sale; I enjoyed it).

I like Grant Morrison, so I am interested in Batman RIP and Final Crisis. I am also thinking in picking up that fat, juicy collection of Superman: Doomed (500 pages for such a low price!). And Batman: Knightfall was very well received, wasn't it? But do I need the three volumes to get a complete story?

I have never read a Green Lantern, Aquaman, or Flash comic, so I feel I need to educate myself and pick up at least one from these guys. My obsessed-with-superheroes 6 year-old son needs a father who knows his stuff. Maybe The Sinestro Corps War (that guys shows up in Forever Evil, so at least I know who he is).

That 52 thingy looks interesting, too. But I don't know what it is.

Anyway, any suggestions? And sorry for my rambling.
