The point of the iso backup is to get back the 3GB space of the update so the system doesn't stay topped up until you get around to upgrading. The iso doesn't have to go on a DVD (that's just the cheapest archival medium).
You can store it anyway you want; thumbdrive, SD card, online cloud, whatever floats your boat...

The whole idea is to grab the update while the grabbing is good and go on with your life until you're ready to upgrade, be it days or months later.
