I toyed with google books on my Kobo tablet, but i'ts not usable with Amazon devices, as server access is blocked. I suspect it's not one of their great successes, & same goes for google play ( for music). I did let that upload 7000+ MP3s from my PC, as it is yet another free backup, but the browser interface is awful compared with spotify & others.
i thinking you can upload books you already own into google books, like you can mp3 into google play, but again, what's the point ?

are there any statistics on google books market shares ? I could ask google but would it give an honest answer

& I don't get the point of the overdrive browser based reader, when tablets have apps and desktops/laptops have ADE + other free options
