Apple's law department probably advised them to perform this action. Since the copyrighted material is being stored on an Apple server, and such servers can probably be hacked, it makes sense to protect the content from theft, using encryption. Taylor Swift is sleeping better tonight, as a result of Apple's prophylactic behavior.
